The decision was subsequently appealed before the Bishkek City Court.

On the same day, March 23, the Leninsky District Court reconsidered the case based on newly discovered circumstances and released the journalist under a travel restriction order. Prior to that, she had been held in women’s correctional colony No. 2 in the village of Stepnoye, Chui region.

On October 10, 2024, the Leninsky District Court of Bishkek sentenced the journalist to six years in prison. The Bishkek City Court later upheld the verdict, and in February 2025 the Supreme Court also confirmed the decisions of the lower courts.

The defense later filed a motion for a review of the case based on newly discovered circumstances. As a result, the Supreme Court ruled that the case should be sent back to the district court for reconsideration.

Earlier, international human rights organizations and representatives of the media community called for a review of the journalist’s sentence.

Makhabat Tazhibek kyzy is a journalist and head of the Temirov LIVE project, as well as the wife of investigative journalist Bolot Temirov. Together, they worked on anti-corruption investigations that drew significant public attention. Bolot Temirov was previously stripped of his Kyrgyzstan’s citizenship and expelled from Kyrgyzstan.
