The amendments remove the existing prohibition on the transit of nuclear weapons through the country’s territory and also allow their storage for defense purposes.

The bill was supported by 125 lawmakers, while 61 voted against.

The legislation was submitted to parliament in late April. Finland’s Ministry of Defence emphasized that the country remains committed to complying with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and other international obligations.

The main purpose of the initiative is to strengthen and further develop North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s collective defense system.

Finland became a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 2023.
