The municipality stated that the disruptions were caused by contamination of the Papan reservoir, which supplies water to the city’s storage tanks. Due to continuous rainfall, muddy runoff from ravines, gorges, and sand and gravel quarries is entering the reservoir. This has also led to the contamination of Ak-Buura River, the main source of Osh’s water supply.
All relevant services are operating in an emergency mode to restore stable water distribution as soon as possible. Residents have been urged to take the situation with understanding.
A new water intake facility is currently under construction on Ak-Buura River, which is expected to resolve around 80 percent of water supply interruptions during heavy rain and mudflows. However, during mudflows from the Papan Reservoir area, as in the current case, disruptions may still occur. Such incidents typically happen once or twice a year.
