According to him, throughout the entire period of independence, the country has commissioned only one generating unit at the Kambar-Ata-2 hydropower plant. At the same time, not a single large hydropower plant has been built.

«Located at the source of some of the largest water resources, we are experiencing an electricity shortage. This is very shameful,» the head of state said.

Sadyr Japarov noted that he still feels uncomfortable having to ask leaders of neighboring countries for electricity supplies during the winter period. However, he said that abandoning imports is not yet possible.

Over the past five years, Kyrgyzstan has commissioned around 50 small and medium-sized hydropower plants, according to the president. Approximately the same number of projects are currently under construction.

Despite these efforts, the country has not yet fully eliminated the electricity deficit. Demand continues to grow due to the construction of factories, industrial facilities, social infrastructure, and residential buildings.

The president expressed confidence that the electricity shortage will eventually be resolved. He also said that starting July 21, the Energy Minister will provide the public with daily detailed updates on the situation in the sector.
