Using digital cameras, scientists are refining the species composition of the fauna and recording rare and endangered species listed in the Red Book. Regular footage of endangered species confirms the high level of biodiversity conservation in the protected area.

The collected photo and video materials serve as a basis for long-term environmental monitoring. The data allow specialists to assess the condition of wildlife populations and develop scientifically based programs to protect natural ecosystems.

The research team is paying particular attention to Chatyr-Kul and Son-Kul lakes, key wetlands in Central Asia where numerous waterfowl species breed and nest.

The Karatal-Zhapyryk State Nature Reserve was established in 1994 in Naryn region to preserve unique high-altitude ecosystems, natural forests and wildlife of the Inner Tien Shan.

The high-altitude lakes Son-Kul and Chatyr-Kul are included in the international list of wetlands and serve as important sites along the seasonal migration routes of rare bird species.
