«We understand that simultaneous membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union is impossible. However, the very fact of the adoption of this law does not mean that Armenia has the opportunity to become a member of the EU today,» Nikol Pashinyan emphasized.
He noted that the path to joining the European Union involves several stages, including an official application, obtaining candidate country status, the consent of all EU member states, and the approval of Armenian citizens in a referendum. Until these procedures are completed, according to the Prime Minister, it is premature to talk about choosing between the EAEU and the European Union.
Nikol Pashinyan also thanked his EAEU partners for recognizing Armenia’s right to develop relations with other states and create alternative trade and economic routes. He also emphasized that Armenia’s relations with the European Union currently contain no legal, economic, or political obligations that would conflict with the country’s membership in the EAEU.
According to the head of the Armenian government, the Eurasian Economic Union should not become a «space of restrictions.» He expressed the opinion that cooperation between the EAEU member states and third countries should not be perceived as a «zero-sum game,» and the attractiveness of the association depends on compliance with mutual agreements, respect for the sovereignty of the participants, and the development of mutually beneficial cooperation.
