A mudslide occurred on August 26 in Gyirong County of Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The disaster also affected border areas of Nepal. The mudslide was triggered by a collapse of ice, rocks and soil in the mountains, sending water and debris down the valley.

As of 10:30 a.m. on August 27, three people had died and 558 were reported missing in the Tibet Autonomous Region as a result of the disaster. Two people were rescued. Search and rescue operations continue, while the number of those killed, injured and missing is being clarified.

According to Nepalese authorities, 826 people are missing, including about 600 foreign tourists. On the Chinese side, 260 foreign nationals are among the 558 people reported missing in Tibet.
